Fluoride Use In Water System Up For Voter Approval

The City of Sarcoxie’s water system is comprised of two main chemical treatments. Between the wells and storage tanks, small pumps are used to mix chlorine and fluoride with the water. The chlorine protects the water from getting bacteria in it, while fluoride is a common water system addition that has been proven to have a positive benefit for bone and dental development for decades.

 

Fluoride was initially introduced into water systems around the world as a hygiene supplement to improve dental health for the general public. Over the last couple of years, several cities have been removing fluoride from their water systems as the risk to the public for the lack of fluoride has drastically decreased. In fact, fluoride has been recently added to toothpastes and other consumer products that boost dental health and over exposure could present more harm than benefit.

 

The City of Sarcoxie approved at the July 16th city council meeting to place on the ballot a question to the voters of whether to leave or remove fluoride as a treatment of the city’s water system.
